Welcome
to our class blog!
You are currently enrolled in a course entitled "American Century." Last semester we covered the inception of the United States, the building of this nation by founding fathers and mothers, and the trials, tribulations and triumphs leading Americans up to the Civil War. This semester we will cover Reconstruction through the 20th century. Our blog will serve to keep us up to date on assignments, as a forum for survey and discussion, and as a launching pad to the rest of the web which will help aid our research as historians. Enjoy!

Due Tuesday Jan. 4th

Finish reading Chapter 11 and taking notes! We will launch right back into content our first class back. I think I may have found my new motto, courtesy of Davy Crockett. Congressman Crockett said, in defense of his opposition to the removal of the Cherokees, "I would sooner be honestly damned than hypocritically immortalized." Wooooo yes I LIKE IT Davy! You tell 'em! If you'd like to read more, visit this article on the Trail of Tears.

Also, you have the opportunity to work on your paper assignment (click the link if you lost your directions) if you so choose. I have posted some links in the right-hand column of the the blog that might help. Please feel free to email me with any questions! Aim to have a draft ready by Friday January 7th.

And for those of you with curious minds, watch the below clips from The Daily Show, and if you're interested in a couple extra points, comment with your thoughts on the Zadroga Bill. What is a filibuster? Why can't this bill pass? What is the senate prioritizing? What is your reaction? Do you think Stewart's coverage was fair? What do you think of the 9/11 first responders' commentary?

  1. I think that the Zadroga Bill is a good idea for those who have ailments from responding to the 9/11 attacks. A filibuster is a speech that deliberately holds up the passing of legislature. This Bill cannot pass because of a GOP filibuster that is claiming that this would be an overreach of the government. The Senate was formerly prioritizing a tax cut for Americans who make over $200,000. Stewart's coverage was fair because this is a Bill that should be passed without question. I think that the responder's commentary was justified in the sense that they are representing themselves and every other individual who needs financial support for medical care.

  2. As John Stuart said the Zadroga Bill only has the potential to benefit people. Those who worked to save lives on 9/11 should have all they need to keep themselves healthy, especially when the ailments they have are attributed to spending countless hours on ground zero in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack in our nations history. A filibuster is when representatives from one or more parties speak to hinder progress in either house of congress. In most cases this happens when legislation is to be voted on. In this case the senate's priority is the tax cut they proposed for those making more than $200,000 annually. Why the Senate feels the need to do this while there are still so many problems in the country is beyond my comprehension. It is important that we protect the welfare of those who protect the people in my opinion.

  3. I think that the Zadroga Bill should be passed and I don’t feel that the senate should be able to just filibuster a bill like that because it affects so many families. The first responders were there for months after 9/11 just doing their job, so it only makes sense to honor them and ones who have passed because of the terrible conditions. A filibuster is the result of a legislative branch or member postponing or forgoing a certain bill. The senate is prioritizing taxes. They are saying that the holidays are coming and it’s necessary that they have time with their family although that wasn’t the fact after 9/11. I don’t think that is fair, why is okay for the senate to say that they need a break but first responders of 9/11 can wait while there wealth diminishes. I think Stewart’s coverage was a little bit biased but he is right and this law should pass so it’s okay. I think the 9/11 first responders commentary added more sympathy to their case and shows how much all people involved in 9/11 could have serious injury or illnesses that should be taken care of.
